Leonida vs Real-Life Florida Locations

GTA 6's Leonida is based on Florida, and each region maps to a real place: Vice City to Miami, the Leonida Keys to the Florida Keys, Grassrivers to the Everglades and more.

GTA 6's real-life locations come from Florida: Leonida is Rockstar's version of the Sunshine State, and each of its regions lines up with a recognisable real place. Vice City is Miami, the Leonida Keys are the Florida Keys and Grassrivers is the Everglades.

Some links are obvious, others are fan readings of the trailers. Rockstar has not published an official comparison, so treat the less clear matches as likely rather than confirmed. You can explore every region on the interactive map.

What real places is GTA 6 based on?

Here is how the six official regions compare with real Florida:

  • Vice City: Miami, including Miami Beach, downtown and the port.
  • Leonida Keys: the Florida Keys, with their long Overseas Highway style bridges.
  • Grassrivers: the Everglades, with swamp, sawgrass and alligators.
  • Port Gellhorn: a blend of Gulf coast and Panhandle port towns.
  • Ambrosia: the inland sugar country around Lake Okeechobee.
  • Mount Kalaga National Park: the forests and springs of north Florida, with extra height.

Which real Miami landmarks appear?

Vice City borrows heavily from Miami. The beachfront strip in Vice Beach echoes Ocean Drive and Miami Beach's Art Deco hotels. The skyline resembles Brickell and downtown Miami, and the container port looks inspired by PortMiami. Rockstar renames and reshapes everything, so you will not find exact copies.

Does GTA 6 parody real Florida culture?

Yes. Trailer 1 is full of in-game social media clips that echo famous viral Florida videos, from strange arrests to wild animal encounters. Our GTA 6 social media page covers how these feeds work in the trailers. We expect plenty more parody of Florida news, ads and local culture across the radio and TV.

How accurate is Leonida to Florida?

Leonida is a compressed, stylised Florida. Distances are shorter, regions sit closer together and some features, like the hills of Mount Kalaga, are exaggerated for gameplay. Expect the feel of Florida rather than a map you could navigate with real directions.

Why did Rockstar choose Florida?

Florida offers huge variety in one state: a glamorous city, tropical islands, swamps, farmland and forest. It also has a reputation online for bizarre news stories, which suits GTA's satirical tone. Leonida lets Rockstar mix all of that into one map while keeping the series' trademark humour.
