GTA 6 combat has not been shown in gameplay form. Every shot in the trailers is from a cutscene or a cinematic angle, so we do not know how aiming, cover or the weapon wheel work. What we do know is how Rockstar's last two big games played, and GTA 6 is likely to build on both.

This page is our best expectation. It will be replaced with real details after 19 November 2026.

How will gunplay feel in GTA 6?

GTA 5 had light, fast, forgiving shooting with strong auto-aim. Red Dead Redemption 2 was slower and heavier, with detailed recoil, bodies reacting to where they were hit and a lot of animation weight.

Likely: GTA 6 lands closer to Red Dead 2. The trailers have a grounded, physical feel, and Rockstar's recent games have all moved in that direction. Expect enemies to stagger, take cover and react to wounds rather than soak up bullets.

Will GTA 6 have a cover system?

GTA 4 introduced snap-to-cover, and GTA 5 and Red Dead 2 kept it. Likely: cover returns, possibly with better blind fire and moving between cover points. Scenes of Lucia and Jason covering each other in doorways suggest teamwork will matter in fights.

Will GTA 6 keep the weapon wheel?

GTA 5 used a weapon wheel where you could carry every gun you owned at once. Red Dead 2 used a similar radial menu but limited what you carried on your person, with long guns stored on your horse.

Speculation: GTA 6 brings in a light carry limit, with bigger guns kept in your vehicle boot. That would fit the grounded style but annoy players used to GTA 5. It is one of the most debated GTA 6 questions in the community.

Is there auto-aim in GTA 6?

Every console GTA has had aim assist, with options for free aim. Likely: the same choices return, and the PC version will default to free aim when it arrives.

Will there be a slow-motion ability?

GTA 5 gave Michael and Trevor special abilities, and Red Dead 2 had Dead Eye. Speculation: Jason or Lucia gets a slow-motion aiming ability. Rockstar has not hinted at it, but it has appeared in some form in most of its recent games. See the dual protagonists page for more on how the two may differ.

Will combat affect your wanted level?

Yes, gunfire always draws the police in GTA. The trailers suggest witnesses and phones may matter more than before. See our wanted system page.

FAQ

How does combat work in GTA 6?

Rockstar has not shown gameplay combat yet. We expect weightier, more grounded gunplay than GTA 5, closer to Red Dead Redemption 2.

Does GTA 6 have a weapon carry limit?

Not confirmed. Red Dead 2 had one, and many fans expect something similar, but GTA 5 let you carry everything.

Is there a cover system in GTA 6?

Not confirmed, but every GTA since GTA 4 has had one, so it is very likely.

Can you switch characters during a fight?

GTA 5 let you switch mid-mission, and GTA 6 has two playable leads, so switching during some fights is likely.
