GTA 6 has two protagonists, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a criminal couple whose story plays out in a Bonnie and Clyde style across the state of Leonida. Rockstar has confirmed both characters, but it has not explained exactly how switching between them will work, so parts of this page are expectation.

Here is what we know about the pair and what we expect from playing as both.

Who are the GTA 6 protagonists?

Lucia Caminos is introduced as a former inmate of Leonida Penitentiary. She is the first female lead in a mainline Grand Theft Auto in decades, since the original game's selectable characters.

Jason Duval grew up around grifters, served in the army and now works for local drug runners in the Leonida Keys. He lives on Brian Heder's property in exchange for help.

Together they form the core of the story, which you can read more about on our Jason and Lucia story page.

Can you switch between Jason and Lucia?

Rockstar has not confirmed a switching system. However, it seems very likely. GTA 5 let players swap between three leads at almost any time, and having two playable characters without a way to move between them would be unusual.

We expect free switching in the open world, plus missions where the game swaps between them at key moments. If it follows GTA 5, switching may also be locked during some story scenes.

How is GTA 6 different from GTA 5's three protagonists?

The big difference is the relationship. Michael, Franklin and Trevor in GTA 5 had separate lives that crossed over during heists. Jason and Lucia are a couple, so their stories are tied together from the start.

That likely means more shared missions, more conversation between the leads and a story that depends on how they treat each other. You can see a broader comparison on our GTA 5 vs GTA 6 page.

Will Jason and Lucia have different skills?

Nothing official says so. In GTA 5 each lead had a special ability and different starting stats, so a similar system would not be a surprise. We expect each character to have their own wardrobe, contacts and progression, but this is unconfirmed.

How might co-op style missions work?

Trailers show the couple robbing a store and making getaways together. We expect missions where one character drives while the other handles the action, or where the player switches at set points to see both sides of a job. That would fit the duo theme well, though the details will only be clear at launch.
