Rocket launchers, grenades and sticky bombs are GTA traditions, but the GTA 6 trailers keep things grounded. Here is what explosive firepower we expect in Leonida and how it might be limited.

GTA 6 heavy weapons are not in any trailer so far. Rockstar's footage has focused on pistols, shotguns and the occasional rifle, which fits a grounded crime story about a couple on the run. But rocket launchers, grenades and sticky bombs are among the most famous things in Grand Theft Auto, and the series has never left them out.

Nothing on this page is confirmed. It is our expectation based on GTA history.

Will GTA 6 have a rocket launcher?

Likely. A rocket launcher has been in every 3D GTA, usually as a late-game weapon for taking down helicopters and police roadblocks. With police helicopters chasing Jason and Lucia through the Grassrivers swamps in official screenshots, you will want something to fight back with.

Which explosives are likely?

Based on GTA 5 and earlier games:

  • Grenades, in every GTA since GTA 3
  • Molotov cocktails, a GTA classic that suits a story of small-time crooks
  • Sticky bombs or remote explosives, used heavily in GTA 5 heists
  • Proximity mines, less certain but present in GTA 5

Speculation: explosives may play a bigger part in heists, for blowing safes and vault doors, than in open-world chaos.

Will there be miniguns and grenade launchers?

GTA 5 had a minigun, a grenade launcher and even futuristic weapons added in updates. Speculation: GTA 6 story mode is likely to keep the minigun but cut back on the over-the-top extras. Anything sci-fi is far more likely to arrive in GTA 6 Online, where GTA Online's wild updates lived.

Why might heavy weapons be harder to get?

Red Dead 2 limited how many weapons you could carry and made dynamite precious. If GTA 6 follows Red Dead 2 and adds a weapon carry limit, a rocket launcher might need to stay in a car boot rather than in your pocket. That would make heavy weapons a choice rather than a default.

Will explosions destroy the world?

GTA 4 and 5 had car explosions, gas station fires and destructible props. Likely: GTA 6 goes further on fire and debris, given how much detail the trailers show, but large-scale building destruction is unlikely. It never has been a GTA feature.
