On this page
GTA 6 preloading starts on November 12, 2026, one week before the game launches on November 19. The official GTA 6 file size has not been confirmed, but we estimate the install will land somewhere between 150 GB and 250 GB.
That estimate is ours, not Rockstar's. Below we explain how preloading works and why you should clear more space than you think.
When can I preload GTA 6?
Digital preloading of Grand Theft Auto VI opens on November 12, 2026, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you have a digital pre-order, the download should become available in your library on that day.
Preloading installs the game files ahead of time, so you only need to wait for the unlock on release day. Physical copies still require installation, and a day-one patch is likely for everyone.
How big is GTA 6?
Rockstar has not published an official install size yet. Our estimated range is 150 GB to 250 GB, and this is an educated guess rather than a confirmed figure.
Here is why we think it will be large:
- Red Dead Redemption 2 needed well over 100 GB on consoles.
- GTA 6 is built for current-generation hardware with dense crowds and detailed interiors.
- The map of Leonida spans a whole state, from Vice City to the Leonida Keys.
Store listings usually show the real size close to preload day, and we will update this page as soon as it appears.
How much free space should I have?
We recommend aiming for at least 250 GB of free space before November 12. That covers the upper end of our estimate plus room for a day-one patch.
Console installs often need extra temporary space during the download, so a little headroom saves you from deleting games at the last minute.
How do I preload GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox?
- Make sure your digital pre-order is complete on PlayStation Store or Microsoft Store.
- Free up storage, either internally or on a supported expansion drive.
- Turn on automatic downloads or check your game library on November 12.
- Leave your console in rest mode so the download and any patch finish overnight.
On Xbox Series S, storage is tighter, so you may need an expansion card or to remove other games.
Will there be a day-one patch?
It is very likely. Most big releases ship with a launch patch, and we expect GTA 6 to be no different. Keep your console online on launch night so updates install before you play.
Once you are in, our launch day checklist and interactive map will help you get started.
