GTA 6 Side Missions, Strangers and Random Events

Every modern Rockstar game fills its map with strangers, odd jobs and random events. Here is what side content GTA 6 is likely to have, based on GTA 5, Red Dead 2 and the oddballs seen in the trailers.

GTA 6 side missions have not been shown, but side content is one of the safest bets you can make about a Rockstar game. GTA 5 had its Strangers and Freaks, and Red Dead Redemption 2 had Strangers missions and hundreds of random encounters. Leonida, a state built on viral weirdness, looks made for it.

This page is our expectation of what side content will look like. Nothing here is confirmed by Rockstar.

Will GTA 6 have Strangers and Freaks?

Likely. GTA 5's Strangers and Freaks were short mission chains marked with a question mark on the map, starring eccentrics like a paparazzo, a celebrity-stalking British couple and a UFO-obsessed hippie. Red Dead 2 used the same idea. Both games used these chains to show off the world's sense of humour.

The GTA 6 trailers are full of candidates: alligator wranglers, bikers, flea market sellers, influencers and people filming fights on their phones. Speculation: expect a few side chains built around Leonida's online culture, such as helping someone get famous or exposing a fake.

What random events could appear in GTA 6?

GTA 5 had random events like muggings, getaway drivers who needed a lift and armoured truck robberies you could interrupt. Red Dead 2 pushed the idea much further, with hundreds of small encounters on the roads.

Based on that history and the trailers, we expect random events such as:

  • Stores being robbed as you drive past, with the option to step in or join in
  • Stranded drivers on the highways of Ambrosia and the Keys
  • Fights outside clubs and bars in Vice City
  • Wildlife trouble in Grassrivers, such as an alligator blocking a road
  • Police stops you can watch, film or interfere with

Will there be odd jobs like taxi and tow missions?

GTA games have offered vehicle side jobs since the 1990s: taxi, ambulance, fire truck, vigilante and towing. GTA 5 cut most of them back. Speculation: a few return in a modern form, such as ride-share or delivery runs on the phone, because they suit a city that lives on apps. See our GTA 6 phone page for more on the in-game apps.

Could side missions be tied to Jason or Lucia?

In GTA 5, each protagonist had their own stranger missions. Likely: GTA 6 does the same, with Jason's side jobs pulling him back to the Keys and his friend Cal Hampton, and Lucia's tied to her life in Vice City after prison.

Where will side missions be found?

Expect them across the whole map, with the strangest ones in rural Leonida. We will mark every stranger, random event spot and odd job on the interactive map after launch.

FAQ

Does GTA 6 have side missions?

Rockstar has not detailed any, but every modern Rockstar open-world game has had them. Side missions in GTA 6 are almost certain.

Will Strangers and Freaks return in GTA 6?

Not confirmed by name. A similar system of eccentric side characters is very likely, since GTA 5 and Red Dead 2 both used one.

Are there random events in GTA 6?

Expected but not shown. GTA 5 and Red Dead 2 both had random events, and Leonida's packed roads and towns are a natural fit.

Will there be taxi missions in GTA 6?

Unknown. Classic vehicle jobs have faded in recent GTA games, but an app-based version is possible.
